This exclusive coffee is harvested by farmers who live high in the Rwenzori mountains of Uganda, they collect the ripe cherries with the help of donkeys, as much of the region is completely inaccessible to vehicles.
£7.00 – £24.00
A slowly grown coffee that should be savoured. The higher altitudes at which this coffee is grown makes for quite a hard, dense bean which has to be carefully processed and sympathetically roasted ,but the results are definitely worthwhile, with the Donkey lots of Kisinga being a premium coffee. We enjoy this coffee all day long and hope you do too.The progressive way that this coffee is grown and bought is improving the farmers lives in the region.

This is a community lot that has been collected by farmers who use donkeys supplied to them by AgriEvolve to harvest the coffee from the otherwise inaccessible slopes. The coffee cherries mature slowly at these high altitudes and a slow maturation results in a complex cup profile. The cherries are kept separate at the community washing stations and assembled into Donkey Lots which reflect the exclusivity of the coffee.A network of buying stations has been set up by Agri Evolve to make the transportaion of cherries less challenging for the farmers. Each station is run by a farmer from who AgriEvolve buy the ripe cherries, this process is designed to foster self-empowerment amongst the farmers.
The Rwenzori Mountains, renowned as the ‘Mountains of the Moon,’ grace Western Uganda with their magnificence, spanning 120 kms and serving as the ancestral abode of the Bakonzo tribe. These towering peaks, blanketed in pristine snow and glacier-fed rivers, owe their lush greenery to high altitudes, fertile soils, and abundant rainfall—perfect for cultivating coffee trees. Coffee thrives under the watchful care of local farmers who toil manually across on average 2 acres of land each. These regal summits ascend to staggering heights of 5,000 masl, embodying the essence of the Rwenzori Mountains, where nature’s bounty and culture harmoniously coexist.
The coffee is harvested and then the cherries are examined for ripeness at the buying stations before they are transported to one of the two washing stations run by Agri Evolve that then process the coffee cherries naturally. The employees of Agri Evolve benefit from health insurance, pensions, and also have their wages paid into a bank account which is not yet common practice in Uganda. Training helps farmers grow better coffee and empowers farmers to look after their trees. The stations are situated at Kisinga and at Bugoye in the north of the Kasese district. Each station keeps records of each lot brought in to help ensure traceability back to the individual farmers.
